Martin L. Zimmerman

Martin Luther Zimmerman, 89, of Taneytown, died Monday, October 12, 2009 at Gettysburg Hospital.
Born December 20, 1919 near Harney, Maryland, he was the son of the late Luther A. and Maude (Phillips) Zimmerman. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, the late Treva Kathryn (Carbaugh) Zimmerman, in 2002.
He was a 1935 graduate of Taneytown High School. He was a life member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and taught Sunday School for many years. He also served as historian for the church’s 250th anniversary. Martin was a life-long dairy farmer. He was a member of the Maryland Dairymen’s Association, the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and served on the board of directors for Southern States. He was a docent and contributor of artifacts at the Taneytown History Museum. He was a member of the Taneytown Heritage Committee. He worked for B&D Woodworking in Silver Run for 20 years and later for M.R. Pfoutz in Union Bridge. He retired at the age of 87 after 18 years with the Carroll County Public Library system’s Taneytown Branch. At the time of his retirement he was the oldest employee of the county workforce. He enjoyed antiques, attending auctions, traveling, and sharing presentations about local history.
He is survived by daughter Jean Tracey and companion Glenn Speicher of Taneytown; daughter Linda Zimmerman and companion Robert Ott of Taneytown; granddaughter, Tisha Tracey and companion Richard Miller of Taneytown; brother-in-law, Raymond Carbaugh of Mayberry; niece, Lorraine Hall of Hanover, PA; nephew, Thomas Stavely of PA; and other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Stavely.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2009 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, Maryland with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
