Margaret Eaton Lafferty, 97, of Westminster, formerly of Parkville, died Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown, after a brief illness.
Born April 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late George R. and Minnie Reed Eaton. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Earl Melvin Schwartz and the late Troy Vernon Lafferty.
She graduated in 1931 from Eastern High School in Baltimore and had a long career as an executive secretary for several corporations. She retired from Steel Tin Products in 1979, and in 1980, at the age of 65, graduated cum laude from Towson State University with a BA in English.
Mrs. Lafferty was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan, an excellent bridge player, and in her younger years maintained a 100+ duckpin bowling average. She was a voracious reader and loved poetry. An active member of Hiss United Methodist Church in Parkville for many years, she served as Sunday School teacher, member of the Hope Circle of the United Methodist Women, and mentor to many young people. After her move to Westminster in 2006, she became active at Westminster United Methodist Church, where she worshipped regularly and was a member of the Miriam Circle of the UMW. Her faith shone in everything she did and everything she was.
Mrs. Lafferty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Anne and William Norman Sears III of Westminster; her nephew and niece-in-law, David Miles and Adele C. Lundquist of Virginia Beach; great nephews Michael Stuart Lundquist and Erik Miles Lundquist; great great nephew Hunter Miles Lundquist; and many friends.
She was predeceased by her sisters Evelyn Dahl and Elisabeth Warren, and brother George Eaton.
A service of celebration for her life will be held at Hiss United Methodist Church, 8700 Harford Road, Baltimore County, at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 7, 2012.
Instead of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hiss United Methodist Church, 8700 Harford Road, Baltimore MD 21234; to Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main Street, Westminster MD 21157; or to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster MD 21157.
