Leo B. “Jack” Topper, Jr., age 65, of Emmitsburg, Maryland died on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at Copper Ridge in Sykesville, Maryland following a battle with complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Born June 29, 1945 in Frederick, Maryland, he was the son of the late Leo and Anna Mae (Gelwicks) Topper. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary L. (Knott) Topper.
Jack was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and Mt. St. Mary’s University as well as a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Emmitsburg. He was retired after 25 years, employed as the Vice-President of Business and Finance with Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg. Jack enjoyed golfing, bowling, home repair work, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also involved in the local baseball league as a coach, manager, and umpire.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Jeffrey Topper, Sr. and wife Theresa of Emmitsburg, Sandra Umbel and husband Chad of Emmitsburg, Mark Topper and wife Sherry of Rocky Ridge; grandchildren, Zach, Jay, Brian, Courtney, and Melanie Topper, Justin, Ben, and Stephanie Andrew, Kayla Umbel; great-grandson, Brayden Andrew; brother, Philip Topper, Sr. and wife Therese of Emmitsburg.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, with the Rev. Charles Krieg, C.M. as celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the New St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmitsburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St. Emmitsburg, where a Christian Wake Service will begin at 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Emmitsburg Osteopathic Primary Care Clinic, Dr. Bonita Krempel-Portier, D.O., 121-123 West Main Street, P.O.
