Lawrence Edward “Pap-Pap” Thompson, 85, of Finksburg, Maryland died peacefully Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Born September 3, 1929 in Sykesville, he was the son of the late William and Anna Merryman Thompson. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Barnhill Thompson, to whom he was married for 52 years.
Lawrence was a meat cutter for Acme Markets in Carroll County for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He enjoyed raising and showing rabbits and was a life-member of the Carroll County 4-H and the Rabbit Breeders Association. He was a recipient of the Jefferson Award in 1980 for outstanding service to the community, and a member of the National 4-H Hall of Fame.
He is survived by daughters, Debra Rupp and husband Brad of Finksburg, MD; Sandra Syed and husband Dr. Hafeez Syed of Reistestown, MD, and Sharon Waldrup of Dover, PA; twin sister, Louise Stierhoff of Reisterstown, MD; faithful companion, Nancy Rhoten of Manchester, MD; grandchildren, Jennifer Gibson of York, PA, Stacy Tawney and husband Alan of Westminster, Zarina Sholl and husband John of Bear, DE, Hina and Zayn Syed of Reisterstown, MD, Shannon Waldrup of Spring Grove, PA, and Kayla Waldrup of Akron, PA, and Cory Gogel of Dover, PA; great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Gibson, Cameron and Peyton Tawney, Addison Killen, and Ashlyn Swope; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Rebecca Thompson, and brothers, Marvin, Charles, and William “Hon” Thompson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Carrollton Church of God, 1901 Carrollton Rd, Finksburg, MD with Pastor Dave Meador officiating. Burial will follow in the Carrollton Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St, Westminster, MD.
