Kathryn Riley Mathias, age 100, of Westminster, Maryland, died on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at her home.
Born July 22, 1908 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Anna (Cowling) Riley. Twice married, she was the wife of the late, C. Herbert McMahon who died in 1957, and the late Joseph L. Mathias, Jr. who died in 1987.
Kathryn was a graduate of Towson State University with a B.S. in teaching, and where she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society (Alpha Chapter). She was retired in 1970, after 34 years teaching elementary school in the Baltimore County School system. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster, the retired teachers associations of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the National retired teachers association, Women’s club of Westminster, and the Historical Society of Carroll County.
Surviving are son, Charles “Mac” H. McMahon, Jr. of Pokomoke City, Md. and step-daughter and spouse, Mary Ellen and Michael Carosella of San Diego, Ca.
Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, and many extended family and friends.
She was pre-deceased by a brother, John “Jack” J. Riley, and by a step-son, Joseph L. Mathias, III in 1975.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 10, 2008 at St. John Catholic Church in Westminster, with Monsignor Arthur Valenzano as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Westminster Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, where a Christian Wake service will be held at 8:00 PM.
