Judith Ann Ryan-Johnson (formerly Sutherland), age 65, of Hagerstown, was taken from us before her time on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born October 27, 1943 in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of Esther Mae (Cunningham) Ryan of Sandy Springs, MD, and the late Harold E. “Pat” Ryan.
Her life was dedicated to caring for others; from being charge nurse in the NICU at John Hopkins Hospital in the early 80’s to then follow a calling to minister to the sick at Good Samaritan Lutheran Church in Lexington Park, MD, while attending the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA . Later she moved to Hagerstown, MD and continued nursing while attending Haven Lutheran Church until she became ill in 2008.
Surviving in addition to her mother, are children, Karen L. Sutherland and companion Jamie Elliott of New Windsor, MD, Tracey B. Celi and husband Scott of Frederick, MD, Brian K. Johnson and companion Melanie Spaethe of Lusby, MD, and David A. Johnson and wife Becca of Hawaii; grandchildren, Chase, Sarah, and Collin Hixson, Tyler Elliott, Alexandra, Rachel, and Megan Celi, Jacob, Riley, and Caitlin Mae Johnson; siblings, Dennis A. Ryan of Fredericksburg, VA, Bruce A. Ryan and Michael R. Ryan both of Reisterstown, MD, William E. Ryan of Hollywood, MD, Kathleen Ryan-Lucero of N.M., Patricia R. Morrill of Gettysburg, PA, Donna L. Ryan-Ruprecht of Rockville, MD, Kevin J. Ryan of VA, Elizabeth Ryan-Drewyer of Alexandria, VA, and Phyllis Ryan-Scully of Wilmington, Del.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at St. Luke’s (Winters) Lutheran Church, Rt. 75, 701 Green Valley Road, New Windsor, MD with the Rev. Anne C. Durboraw, Rev. Linda Alessandri, and her brother-in-law, funeral celebrant John C. Morrill, co-officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 PM until the time of service, and immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
