Joseph Alfred Hill, Jr., 96, of Taneytown died peacefully Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster. Born August 6, 1918 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Joseph Alfred and Marie Elizabeth Avvey Hill, Sr.
Joe was a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taneytown where he served as sexton from 1933 to 1942, and where the nuns taught him reading, writing, and arithmetic. He was employed at the Nusbaum Canning Factory from 1943 to 1957, the Jenkins Canning Factory from 1958 to 1972, and the Cambridge Rubber Company in Taneytown from 1972 to 1980. He was also employed by the John S. Teeter and Sons Company and the Teeter family in Taneytown from 1957 to 1968. During those years, he spent summers in Old Greenwich, Connecticut and West Sandgate, Vermont with the Virginia Teeter and Richard Haggerty family. Joe enjoyed fishing and trap shooting. He was a member of the York County Shoot from 1948 to 1968, and received many trophies for his shooting skills. He was also a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and music, and was interested in local history and astronomy.
Joe was a good friend to many, and spent time visiting family and friends in retirement. He is descended from an old Carroll County family, and is survived by many cousins in Carroll County, Harrisburg, PA, and Washington, D.C.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, MD with Monsignor Martin E. Feild as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends are invited to gather in the church an hour before the service.
