John H. Shipley, Sr., 70, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, died on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Gettysburg Hospital.
Born on December 1, 1947 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Walter Shipley, Sr., and Catherine “Kitty” (Bowers) Goodling.
John was a member of the Littlestown Eagles and Littlestown VFW. He was retired from the Littlestown foundry maintenance department. He loved to take long rides, fishing, boating, and hunting. He also enjoyed taking golf cart rides around his camp site, listening to country music, and watching old western movies. He also enjoyed playing cards, Yahtzee and Sudoku puzzles.
Surviving are former spouse, Bertha F. (Summers) Emerson of Littlestown; daughters, Barbara Rill and husband Rusty of Taneytown and Theresa Rill and husband Rodney of Taneytown; 9 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Miller and husband Allen of Oakland, MD, Patsey Weishoar of Taneytown, and Brenda Few of Taneytown; brother, Walter “Butch” Shipley, Jr. and wife Jeannie of Littlestown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, John H. Shipley, Jr. in 2016.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., in Taneytown, MD with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace U.C.C. Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends on Thursday January 18th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be to the funeral home to help the family with final expenses.
