John Nicholas Reiter, 90, of Westminster, Maryland, formerly of Carroll Vista in Taneytown, died peacefully on Wednesday morning October, 25, 2017 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster.

Born February 25, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late William Albert and Anna (Heinz) Reiter.  He was predeceased by his wife Shirley A. (Novak) Reiter in 2012.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during W.W.II as a Seaman 2nd Class in the 7th Fleet in the N. Africa and European Theatres.  Upon his return from the war John worked as a mechanical supervisor for M. Nelson Barnes and Sons, and later worked as Director of Facilities at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville as well as Copper Ridge.  He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westminster, and a life-member of the V.F.W. Post #467 in Westminster.  He enjoyed hunting, wood-crafts, and model aircraft.

Surviving are daughters, Darlene Zeiler and husband Steve of Westminster, and Deborah R. Knouse and husband Russell of Keymar; son, John F. Reiter of Taneytown; grandchildren, Royce Zeiler of Westminster, Nicholas Reiter and wife Robin of Manchester, Bradley Reiter and wife Randi of Marion, Shawn Reiter and wife Bethany of Taneytown, John Wade “J.W.” Reiter of Washington, D.C., William “Billy” Knouse and wife Jessica of Raleigh, N.C., and Alicia Knouse of Mayberry; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Alexis, Lilly, Riley, Brantley, Brad, Jr., and Elora Reiter, and Ellis Knouse.

He was predeceased by son, Nicholas A. Reiter; grandson, Jamie Lee Miller; siblings, Richard Bryant, Roland Reiter, William Reiter, Martha Bryant, Anna Stange, Christine Schissler, and Mary Reiter Malczewski.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St., Westmisnter with Rev. Kevin C. Clementson officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow in the Meadow Branch Cemetery in Westminster.  The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
