John Michael Gelwicks Sr.

John Michael Gelwicks Sr., 68, of Emmitsburg died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  Born February 11, 1945 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Earle and Donaldine Hahn Gelwicks.

John was a machine operator at the Lions Brothers Company in Owings Mills for 40 years.  After his retirement in 2011, he worked in maintenance at Mother Seton School in Emmitsburg.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.  John enjoyed cooking, shooting pool, and collecting coins.

Surviving are son, John Michael “Mike” Gelwicks Jr. of Emmitsburg, MD; daughter, Jennifer Shank and husband Terry of Gettysburg, PA; sister, Mary Ann Baker and husband Charles of Finksburg, MD; brother, Joseph Gelwicks and wife Sandra of Emmitsburg, MD; brother, James Gelwicks and Teresa of Fairfield, PA; sister, Joan Elower and husband Donald of Emmitsburg, MD; grandchildren, Bradly Shank and wife Alisha of Biglerville, PA, and Amber and Megan Shank of Gettysburg, PA; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Mark Gelwicks, and sisters, Donna Singley and Margaret Ridenour.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 20 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. Charles F. Krieg, C.M. officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.
