John Robert Eckard, age 94, of York, PA, formerly of Taneytown, MD, left his home on earth and entered his eternal home in heaven Thursday, November 3, 2011. He passed away at Rest Haven Nursing Center in York. Born December 28, 1916 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Clarence & Rosa Belle Ohler Eckard. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Trostle Eckard who passed away July 1, 2007. They were married nearly 72 years.
He worked as a driver for Cambridge Rubber Company in Taneytown. He loved attending his church and enjoyed sports, especially baseball. He threw out the first pitch at the York Revolution ballpark four consecutive years. He was a regular visitor at Crouse Ford.
He is survived by daughter, Donna Lewis and husband, Robert, of Red Lion, PA; grandchildren, John Lewis of York, Vincent Lewis & wife, Jeanne of York, Steven Eckard & wife, Lisa of New Oxford and Kenneth Eckard and companion, Sharon of Littlestown; and great-grandchildren, Seth, Matt & Nate Lewis and Chad, Ashley & Wesley Eckard. He was predeceased by son, Larry Eckard, sister, Margaret Fair, and brothers, Norman & Walter Eckard.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with Pastor Robert C. Wills, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday.
