John Griffith Carhart, Jr., 83, of Finksburg died peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.  Born December 5, 1934 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late John Griffith Carhart, Sr. and the late Catherine (Florey) Carhart.  He was the devoted husband of the late Anna Will (Miller) Carhart, to whom he was married for 46 years.  She died on April 13, 2006.

John was a Baltimore City police officer from 1960-1964.  He then served as a Baltimore County officer for 25 years, retiring in 1989. Following retirement, John worked for several years as a deliveryman for Carroll County Auto Parts. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and St. John’s Catholic Church in Westminster.  John was a history buff and enjoyed walking, working on his 1940 Chevy, traveling and collecting old postcards. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his 5 children, Catherine Carhart-Sigmon of Finksburg, Stephanie Haines and husband Michael of Westminster, Glenda Shamer and husband John of Hanover, PA, John Carhart III and wife Katherine of Manchester, and James Carhart and wife Bobbi of Finksburg; brothers-in-law, Guy Miller and wife Carolyn and Gilbert Miller and wife Melanie, all of Sanford, FL; grandchildren, Christopher Sigmon, Anastasia Sigmon, Randall Haines and fiancé Ashley Deavers, Justin Carhart and fiancé Chelsea Strickhouser, Alexandra Carhart, Taylor Carhart and Bret Carhart; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St., Westminster, MD with Rev. Father Andrew DeFusco officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25th.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157 or to Reese Community Volunteer Fire Department, 1745 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster, MD 21157.
