John L. Armacost

John Lewis Armacost, age 89, of Westminster, Maryland, died peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Lorien Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown.
Born on December 5, 1923 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late George H. Armacost, Sr. and Edith Brown Armacost. He was the beloved husband of Betty Ahalt Armacost for more than fifty eight years.
He was a 1941 graduate of Westminster High School and the University of Maryland. He was a member of the first golf team of Westminster Senior High School and lettered on the university of Maryland golf team. He was awarded membership in the “M” club, where he was known for his ability and sportsmanship.
He served proudly in the U.S. army Air Corp, serving in the European Theatre as part of the 434th troop carrier group, the 71st troop carrier Squadron, ferrying troops and supplies to Normandy, Bastogne, Holland and to Germany.
He was a licensed professional civil engineer in the employ of the State Roads Commission of Maryland for more than 20 years. He became Director of the Roads Dept. of Carroll County and later as the Director of Public Works of Carroll County. In 1982 he was elected to the Board of County Commissioners of Carroll County, and handily won re-election in 1986, serving two full terms as a commissioner and 8 years as president of said board. He opted to not seek re-election in 1990.
He was a member of the Engineering Society of Baltimore, the County Engineers of Maryland, the American Legion Post #0282 of Woodsboro, MD, and the National Rifle Association. Previously, he enjoyed being a member of the Choral Society of Carroll County from it’s inception. He was also a former member of the Westminster Rotary Club.
He very much enjoyed playing golf, traveling, playing cards and being with family and friends.
He is survived by four children, Mark L. Armacost and wife, Carla of Hanover, PA, Brian A. Armacost and wife Darlene of Emmitsburg, MD; Jill L. Armacost of San Antonio, TX, and Sheryl A. Dutterer and husband, Bruce of Littlestown, PA. He is survived by a sister, Barbara A. Butler of Waynesboro, VA and the following grandchildren, April A. Hoffman and husband, Jake of McSherrystown, PA, Shelly L. Armacost of Sinking Spring, PA, Theodore C. Armacost of Hanover, PA, Rachel C. and Evan J. Dutterer of Littlestown, PA and Dana Croft of Frederick, MD. Also survived by three great grandchildren, Gunnar and Ava Hoffman and Lawson Croft, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, George H. Armacost, Rowland B. Armacost, James W. Armacost and a sister, Edith A. Ernest.
There will not be a viewing, as cremation will follow. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Saturday January 19, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster.
