John Leon Anders

September 8, 1937 — April 13, 2015

John Leon Anders, 77, of Taneytown, Maryland went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 13, 2015.  Born September 8, 1937 at Catoctin Furnace near Thurmont, he was the son of the late Marie Anders Little.    He was raised by William Baker and Sarah Isabelle Anders, and then by William “Bubbie” Anders.  He was the loving husband of Sandra Lee Snyder Anders, to whom he was married for 54 years.

Leon was a graduate of Thurmont High School and later attended the University of Maryland.  He served for 6 years in the United States Army Reserves.  He was employed by the Maryland State Highway Administration as Resident Maintenance Engineer for Carroll County, and then as Assistant District Engineer for Maintenance District 7.  He retired after 32 years of service, and subsequently worked as a consultant for several engineering companies.  Leon was a member of Haugh’s Mt. Zion Lutheran Church near Keymar for 54 years, where he served numerous times as council president. He also served as joint council president, and taught Sunday School for more than 25 years.  He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1381 in Westminster, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Littlestown, and was a former member of the Woodsboro Dance Club.  He also called numbers at New Midway Fire Hall and at church suppers for many years.  He enjoyed reading, dancing, and attending basketball games at the Mount.  He loved spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Lori Eyler and husband Mark of Thurmont; son, Michael Anders and wife Lisa of Union Bridge; grandchildren, Mandy Howard and husband Steven, Stephanie, Matthew, and Amy Eyler, and Megan Anders; brothers, Richard Little of Carroll Valley, PA, and David Little and wife Charlene of Emmitsburg; sisters, Mary Jean Orndorff of Emmitsburg, Joyce Grimm of Thurmont, Joan Smith and husband Dave of Emmitsburg, Carolyn Smith and husband Karl of South Carolina, Beth Little-Terry and husband Leonard of Bokeclia, FL, and Elaine Ebaugh and husband Denny of Emmitsburg; brother-in-law, Monroe Hewitt; sister-in-law, Shirley Little; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters, Geraldine Hewitt and Christina Little; brother, Larry Little; and special family friend, Miriam Deitz.

A memorial service to celebrate Leon’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating.  Interment will be private.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
