Joan Ruth VanScoyoc Mowery

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Joan Ruth VanScoyoc Mowery passed away peacefully at her residence in Littlestown, PA, at the age of 90. Born on September 22, 1934, in Johnstown, PA, she was the cherished daughter of the late Adam VanScoyoc and Sara Hoyland. Joan was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Leroy “Pete” Mowery, with whom she shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. 

As a young adult, Joan worked for the Johnstown Housing Authority. She loved roller skating and was proud to own her first car, a 1958 Pontiac. A member of the Moose Lodge in Westminster, MD, Joan delighted in dancing to classic country music at Rosie’s with her husband. Her hobbies included sewing and crafts, and her children’s favorite memories were of making ceramic Christmas ornaments with her kiln. 

The family enjoyed many joyful times camping at Riverbend on the Potomac River in Falling Waters, WV, where friends and loved ones gathered to create lasting memories. In her later years, Joan cherished watching Dr. Pol, spending time with her family, and indulging in paint-by-numbers artwork on her iPad. 

Joan is survived by her loving children, Sandra Harig (husband Jeff), Michele Dearstine (husband John), and Kenneth Allen Mowery. She was a devoted grandmother to Amanda Harig, Kortney Mowery, Johnny Dearstine, Brooke Harig, Joey Mowery, Morgan Mowery, Aubrey Dearstine and great grandmother to Jax. She is also survived by her Brother Adam Thomas VanScoyoc and his wife Dodie and her sister- in- law Dottie Benyacko. She is Predeceased by her Brother Terry L. VanScoyoc 

The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, P.A., 136 E. Baltimore Street, Taneytown, MD, 21787, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
