J. Neal Bankert

J. Neal Bankert, age 75, of Gettysburg, PA, formerly of Taneytown, MD, died peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown.
He was born on June 17, 1939 in Hanover, PA, the son of the late Samuel Joseph and Dorothy Elizabeth (Hook) Bankert.  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Martha Jane (Cook) Bankert.
Neal was a graduate of Westminster High School Class of 1957.  He was a volunteer fireman for the New Windsor Fire Department for many years.  He was a lifetime member and served on the board of the Mayberry Rod and Gun Club.  He was recognized by the State of Maryland for over 40 years of volunteer service as a Hunter Safety Instructor and was received into the State Department of Natural Resources Hall of Fame.  Neal was an avid hunter, fisherman, expert marksman, and enjoyed boating and time at his cabin getaway.  When his daughters were younger he helped coach their rec basketball and softball teams.  In 2002 he retired from Petro Oil Company as a HVAC technician and licensed plumber.  He spent much of his early retirement as a regular at Yingling’s Equipment.  The rest of his time he taught his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to fish.  His family was the center of his world.  He brought love, laughter and wisdom to all.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters, Stacy Wilson and husband Michael of Taneytown, Kim Jenkins and husband Rick of Taneytown, Jerrie Cole and husband Mike of Taneytown, and Jennifer Bankert of Westminster; grandchildren, Andrew Jenkins, Matthew Wilson, Erin Jenkins, Allison Wilson, Forrest Cole, and Mason Cole; great-grandchildren, Amir Jenkins, Jayana Carter, Arien Magruder, Layla Carter, and Annabellah Wilson; sister, Sandra Ferguson and husband Thomas of Westminster; sister-in-law, Dianne Anderson of Gettysburg; brother-in-laws and sister-in-law, Greg and Barbara Cook of Haymarket, Va, and Wayne Wilson of Sykesville.  Also surviving are numerous cousins, nephews, and dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown with Pastor Garry Sheaffer officiating.  Interment will follow in Keysville Union Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
