Jean A. Harman, 87, of Taneytown, died peacefully Monday, May 25, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born July 12, 1927 in Washington, D.C., she was the adopted daughter of the late Harry and Martha Stratton Mohney. She was the wife of George Harman, to whom she was married for 45 years. He died in 1991.
Jean was a 1944 graduate of Taneytown High School. She was an active member of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary. Jean and her husband George owned and operated Harman Brothers Used Cars and Service Stations in Taneytown for the 45 years they spent together as partners in their married life and work. She enjoyed reading, baking, and cooking. She especially enjoyed her volunteer work at the White House during the Reagan and Bush administrations.
Surviving are daughter, Martha Mayer of Waldorf; two wonderful grandsons, Donald and Jeffrey Mayer of Waldorf; and a number of nieces, nephews, and in-laws from the Harman side of the family. In these later years, a new member, her cat Boots, joined the family. She was predeceased by infant son, Richard, who died in 1948 at the age of 6 weeks.
A memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015 at the Firemen’s Activity Building, 49 Memorial Dr., Taneytown, MD, with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Interment is private. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD.
