James Luther “Jim” Sanders, Sr., 84, of Emmitsburg, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at his home. Born March 26, 1934 in Fairfield, PA, he was the son of the late Lawrence Calvin and Jesse Elizabeth (Swisher) Sanders. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Jean (Joy) Sanders, to whom he was married for 65 years.
Jim was a Leather Cutter at the Gettysburg Shoe Company for 25 years and then at Liberty Manufacturing in Emmitsburg for a number of years until his retirement. He was a quiet man who enjoyed the simple things in life like gardening, birdwatching, working jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with his family. He was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles.
Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Jean, are his 5 children, James Luther Sanders, Jr. of Fairfield, John Sanders and wife Bonnie of Rocky Ridge, MD, Jeffrey Lee Sanders and wife Sherrie of Fairfield, Jean Louise Gnip and husband Ed of Westminster, MD and Joel Sanders of Emmitsburg; sisters, Carolyn Flohr and husband Richard, and Barbara Cool and husband Jim, all of Fairfield; sisters-in-law, Helen Sanders of Fairfield, and Esther Sanders of Biglerville; brother-in-law, Lloyd Stultz of Fairfield; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 siblings, Jessie Sanders, Lawrence Sanders and Lois Stultz.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to Easter Seals, 1420 Spring St., Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to Smile Train, P.O. Box 96321, Washington, D.C. 20090.
