James Robert Langdon, Sr., age 91, of Westminster, died on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Westminster.
Born October 26, 1919, in New Windsor, Maryland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lula (Etzler) Langdon. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Ina Mae (Rakes) Langdon, who died August 22, 2005.
Mr. Langdon graduated in 1936 from New Windsor High School and Western Maryland College, class of 1940. A veteran of W.W.II, he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific Theater. For a time, he worked as a stock broker before beginning multiple family businesses of Polar Peak Ice Cream, Bio-Chem Company, and Langdon Oil Co., trading as Direct-To-You-Gas. He and his wife joined other caring parents, founding the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as CCARC, to offer scholastic, recreational, and employment opportunities to their special children.
Surviving him are sons and daughters-in-law, James R. and Margaret “Maggie” Langdon, Edward A. and Linda Langdon all of Westminster, daughter and son-in-law, Susan L. and Douglas Quade of Keuka Park, N.Y.; grandchildren, Michael Langdon, Jenny Parsley, Megan Pratt and James D. Quade; two great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Donald “Donnie” Grayson Langdon in 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster with the Rev. Twyla Rowe officiating. Interment will follow in the Pipe Creek Cemetery in Union Bridge, MD. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
