James "Jim" Benjamin Cole of Westminster died Thursday, October 14, 2010, in Westminster. The son of the late David Cole and the late Juanita Sherrin Skiles, he was born February 15, 1943, in Uniontown, PA. He was the husband of Marilyn Mooshian Cole and the father of J. Michael Cole. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Jim served in the U.S. and Iceland from 1959 to 1963.
His first job after leaving the Navy was as a machinist and tool and dye maker at Black and Decker. Jim earned a degree from the University of Maryland and taught machine shop and welding at Francis Scott Key High School. At Marada Industries, he was the safety officer and won awards for his exemplary safety programs. Jim was also in charge of Marada's apprenticeship program.
In retirement, he was the range officer at Hap Baker Firearms Facility in Westminster. A lifelong member of the NRA, Jim was a gun enthusiast and skilled target shooter. His other interests included nature photography and travel. Jim and Marilyn coordinated group trips to such places as Egypt, Australia, and much of Europe.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his son J. Michael and daughter-in-law Lucille of Westminster; brother and sister-in-law, George and Elaine Skiles of Voluntown, CT; grandchildren Bradley, Valerie, Matthew, Lily, and Mikayla; aunt, Marla McKnight of Uniontown, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster. Following the service, the family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Inurnment will take place at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, 11501 Garrison Forest Rd., Owings Mills, MD on Friday, October 22, 2010, at 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions made to Carroll Christian Schools, 550 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster, MD 21157.
