Howard M. Welty, age 95, of Westminster, Maryland formerly of Taneytown, died peacefully Wednesday, September 28 at the home of his granddaughter, where he resided in Westminster, Maryland.
Born August 8, 1916 in Keysville, Maryland he was the son of the late Harry and Clare Welty. He was predeceased by his wife Olive Agatha Welty in 1980.
He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Taneytown, Maryland. Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during W.W.II in the Pacific. He worked for Cambridge Rubber Company and the Carroll County Board of Education for many years. Because of his love for children upon retirement he became a crossing guard for the school system in Taneytown. His involvement in the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department was extremely strong. Joining the company September 3, 1941 he served many roles during his 70 years of service. He was proudly inducted into the Carroll County Fireman Association Hall of Fame in 1995. He enjoyed going to Country Kitchen for a good home cooked meal, socializing at the fire company, visiting with friends, watching his favorite baseball team the New York Yankees and the time he spent with his family.
Surviving are son Vic Welty; granddaughter, Sherry and husband Joe O’Neill; great-granddaughters, Victoria and Gabrielle O’Neill; great-grandson, Steven O’Neill; great-great-granddaughter, Taytum O’Neill; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Bowers. Also surviving are several nieces and a nephew; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews; close friend Gordon Brauning and many other friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore St., Taneytown with his pastor the Rev. Steven Ostendorf-Snell officiating. Interment will follow at the Keysville Union Cemetery in Keysville. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
