Howard Lee Barnes, Jr., 82, of Taneytown died peacefully Friday, November 1, 2013 at his home. Born September 8, 1931 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Howard Lee Barnes, Sr. and the late Ethel Alverta Richter Barnes. He was the husband of Joyce Elizabeth Blizzard Barnes, his wife of 58 years.
Howard and his wife owned and operated the Taneytown Car Wash, the Car Wash Suites, and Taney House Spirits. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a tank Commander in the United States Army’s 2nd Armored Division. He enjoyed sports, showing his classic cars, and traveling with his wife throughout the United States and Europe.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sisters, Elsie Black of Keymar, and Emma Thomas of Missouri; brothers, Robert Barnes of Taneytown, and Truman Barnes of Middleburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Nellie Stitely, and brothers, David and Clarence Barnes.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, November 4 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, located at 136 E. Baltimore St. in Taneytown. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 5 at the funeral home with the Rev. Anne Owens, chaplain with Gilchrist Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.
