Hester Marie (Bassler) Dasher

May 1, 1925 — January 14, 2016

Hester Marie Dasher, age 90, died peacefully at her home near Keymar on January 14, 2016. Marie was born in Fulton, Maryland on May 1, 1925, and was a long-time resident of Howard County. She moved to Carroll County in 1994.

Marie was the daughter of the late Hester Elizabeth Wessel and John Bassler, of Fulton, and she was preceded in death by three brothers, Reverend John Herman Bassler, Robert Elmer Bassler, and Norman Roy Bassler. She married George Harold Dasher, now deceased, of Ellicott City, on April 23rd, 1949, and the couple had two children, George Roy and Elisa Marie Dasher.  Also surviving are two grandchildren, Amber Elisa and Lucas Clifford Bowman, three sisters-in-law, and a large number of nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces.

Marie graduated from Clarksville High School in the spring of 1942.  She graduated from Strayer Business College in 1943 and from Howard Community College in the early 1980s. She worked at Fruit Growers Express (during World War II), the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and the Howard County Board of Education.

Marie was a strong presence in all three of the churches to which she belonged during her life: Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulton, Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Ellicott City, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Taneytown.  She was a board member at Saint Johns, enjoyed working with young people, taught Sunday School for almost two decades, and was an active long-time participant and leader in the Luther League.  One of the high points of her life was when her church choir traveled to England and sang in the Coventry Cathedral.  She also traveled to Germany and visited the room in which Martin Luther translated the Bible into German.

Marie's wishes were to be cremated, and a memorial service will be held this spring.
Memorials may be made to Lutheran World Relief, 700 Light St., Baltimore, MD  21230.

Arrangements have been entrusted to MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Taneytown, MD.
