Helene “Grammy” Mae Williams, age 93 of Westminster, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Carroll Lutheran Village. She was born September 24, 1915 in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Christopher and Ann Welsh Erbe. She had three brothers and two sisters. She graduated from Tamaqua High School in 1934. She was the wife of the late Allen C. Williams who died in 1996. She worked in an ice cream parlor and met her husband. It was love at first sight. He asked to walk her home that very night. After a Thanksgiving Day wedding, they had one daughter, Gail A. Williams Hillier-Varner. They traveled quite a bit and Grammy was not only a spectator but also a participant in many archery tournaments.
She also worked in a munitions factory in Newton Falls, OH during WWII and then in a textile factory that made the roofing material for cars interiors in Bangor, PA.
Grammy was an avid knitter and created the most beautiful things, some of which were newborn baby hats and blankets that were donated to local hospitals and The Linus Project. One of her greatest loves was playing cards and could be seen every night playing until 8:30.
Grammy was a devoted wife, mother, grand & great-grandmother. Her generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to her family and friends. She lived her life with integrity and compassion. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her granddaughters and husbands, Heather Hillier and Thomas Huff, Wendy Hillier and David Barrett and great granddaughter, Ashley Barrett.
