Gregory Alan Sherman, 62, of Frederick died peacefully Saturday, August 23, 2014 at his home in Frederick. Born August 10, 1952 in Phoenix, Arizona, he was the son of the late Stanford Glen and Joan Labno Sherman.
Greg enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up in the wild, untamed desert around Phoenix, where he played pioneers with a make-shift covered wagon, beheld the wonders of the Grand Canyon, Red Rock country of Sedona, and San Francisco Peaks of Flagstaff. He learned to hunt in the Arizona desert with his grade school friend, Jon Clark. Jon’s father taught them to hunt dove, quail, and the occasional rattlesnake, thus commenced Greg’s life-long hobby of gun ownership. He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association. He and his friend Mark could often be found target shooting at the Sportsman’s Club. Greg was a league bowler at Terrace Lanes and enjoyed the camaraderie of the other members. Greg was a cook at several restaurants over the years, including Chubby’s in Emmitsburg.
In 1982, Greg joined his sister Alanna in San Francisco where they explored the beauty of the Bay area and northern California, enjoying the international flavor. Greg later moved to Frederick in 1999 to again join Alanna. Together they explored Civil War history throughout the eastern United States. Greg was particularly drawn to the dramatic story of the Battle of Gettysburg. He and Alanna were participants at various Gettysburg events, including the annual reading of the Gettysburg Address and the Illumination of the soldiers’ graves at the battlefield cemetery. Greg found peace walking the streets of Gettysburg while contemplating the enormity of the Gettysburg battle. He felt a connection with the soldiers, and expressed his desire to be buried near the battlefield.
Greg is survived by his beloved sister, Alanna Sherman of Frederick, and two other sisters and a half-sister. He leaves behind close friends, Mark, Pam, and Megan Freund and their two dogs, Oscar and Clyde; family friend, Janice Montgomery of Cottonwood, AZ; grade school friends; and others in San Francisco and Frederick. Greg had a good heart. He was a kind soul with a gritty sense of humor. He was a loyal friend, and was a devoted and caring brother to his beloved sister, Alanna, his companion in his many travels and adventures.
A funeral service and celebration of Greg’s life will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 27 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 199 North Place, Frederick, MD.
