George Naylor, Jr.

Taneytown

George Wilbur Naylor, Jr., 94, of Taneytown, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at his home.  Born July 13, 1926 at the Frederick Hospital in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late George Wilbur Naylor, Sr. and the late Ruth Opal (Sensenbaugh) Naylor.  He was the devoted husband of the late Betty Jane (Fream) Naylor.  She passed January 15, 2016.

George was a graduate of Emmitsburg High School, class of ’43, and the Hagerstown Business School.  He was a member of Tom’s Creek Methodist Church until 1945, when he was drafted.  At that time, his family relocated to Taneytown and joined Trinity Lutheran Church.  George was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving 2 years in the Regular Navy, attached to the Naval Air Station in San Juan and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico.  He also served 5 years in the U.S. Naval reserve, attached to Com Five, Norfolk, VA.  He was honorably discharged in 1953.

Upon returning from the Navy, George became very active at Trinity Lutheran Church as a member of the Men’s Chorus and the church choir; and as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent.  He served on the Finance Committee for over 50 years, and was a long-time member of the Church Council.  He was Coordinator of the church parsonage remodel in 1994, and the bell tower repair following the lightning strike in July, 1995.  He remained active in the Retired Men’s Repair Group doing maintenance work around the church.

George was employed by Cambridge Rubber Company in Taneytown, retiring in 1989 as the Chief Cost Accountant after 42 years.  During that time, he served 20 years on Taneytown’s City Council.  Upon retirement, he served on several city and community committees.  He helped organize, and was one of the founding members of the Taneytown History Museum.  He loved the outdoors, especially gardening.

Surviving are his daughter, Rhonda Danner of Taneytown; son, Sidney Naylor and wife Debbie of Madison, TN; sisters, Arlene Okerlund of Los Gatos, CA, and Janice Van Noppen of Hampton, VA; grandchildren, Wade Danner and wife Kristin of NC, Holly Danner of Silver Spring, MD, Casey Naylor of Greenbrier, TN, and Luke Naylor and wife Mandi of White House, TN; great-grandchildren, Carter, Miles and Roxanne; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of George’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with military honors presented at the church. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Taneytown.  Inurnment will take place at Keysville Union Cemetery at a later date.
