George A. “Pap” Gist, age 92, of Smallwood, died peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.
Born January 7, 1921 in Westminster, he was the son of the late George A. and Ethel (Ridinger) Gist. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Eloise Myers Gist in August 2012.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He worked for Congoleum Corp. in Finksburg and later owned and operated his own lawn and landscaping contracting business. He liked vegetable gardening, woodworking, crafting furniture, farming, and raising Herford cattle. He was a loving, devoted, and hardworking father and grandfather.
Surviving are children, Linda K. Gist of Hanover, PA, Bobbi May and husband Charlie of Westminster, Randy Gist and companion Joanne Saltzgiver and Debbie Sipes and husband Ronnie all of Westminster; sister, Irene Unger of Taneytown; grandchildren, Doug, Darren, and David Beacham, Kelly Dittmar, Wendi Weigle, Corey May, Natalie Gist, Tracey Hale, and Sara Sipes; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Edith Farver and Elizabeth Settle and brother, Norman Gist.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 14, 2013 from 3-8 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, where services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Ray Shutt officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Shipley.
