George A. Fream

George Allen Fream, 91, of Hanover, PA, died peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA.  Born April 17, 1927 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late J. Ernest and Muriel (Hersh) Fream.  He was the husband of LaReina (Bankert) Fream, to whom he was married for 68 years.

George graduated from Taneytown High School, class of ’44, after completing 7 years in the 2-room schoolhouse in Harney, MD.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving 6 years during World War II and the Korean War.  He worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1986 as Postmaster of Taneytown, MD.  George’s government service totaled 41 years.

George enjoyed vegetable gardening, golfing, dancing and playing cards.  His membership affiliations included American Legion Post #120 in Taneytown, VFW Post #6954 in Littlestown, PA, where he was a Life Member, Maryland State Postmaster’s Association #38, National Association of Postmasters, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Adams/Hanover #1797, and the Taneytown Jaycees.  He was a charter member of New Hope Faith Community Church in Hanover, PA, and was active in his former church, Grace United Church of Christ in Taneytown, MD, for many years where he served in roles of leadership.  George was also a charter member of the Taneytown Jr. Chamber of Commerce.  He was Past President/Treasurer of the Taneytown Senior Chamber of Commerce and was Past President of the Maryland/Northwest Tri-County Postmaster’s Association #217.  He retired from the Taneytown Bank and Trust Company’s Board of Directors in 1996.  He was voted Outstanding Young Man of the Community in 1962.

Surviving, in addition to his wife LaReina, are daughter, Diane Wilhide and husband Dan of Keymar, MD; brothers, James Fream of Glen Burnie, MD, Glenn Fream of Taneytown, MD, Robert Fream of Thurmont, MD and John Fream of Dillsburg, PA; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters, Marie Smith, Betty Naylor, and Maxine Bowers; and brothers, Ellwood Fream, who was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, and Charles Fream.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at New Hope Faith Community Church, 33 Sunday Drive, Hanover, PA 17331, with Pastor Jim Herbert officiating.  A luncheon at the church will follow the service.  Burial will then take place at Grace UCC Cemetery in Taneytown.  The family will receive friends at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30th.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in George’s name may be made to New Hope Faith Community Church at the above address.
