Francis “Jerry” Gerard Joy, age 77, lifelong resident of Emmitsburg, Maryland, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 surrounded by his family at his home. Born July 5, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Hubert L. and Gertrude R. (Seabold) Joy. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Dorothy G. (Orndorff) Joy. Jerry retired from the Federal Government at Ft. Detrick in Frederick as a records manager. He later worked as a purchasing agent at Mt. St. Mary’s University, and as a security officer with FEMA/USFA National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, and enjoyed riding his Gold-Wing Motorcycle, playing softball, and fishing. Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Denise and Bill Runkles of Thurmont, Perry and Suzanne Joy of Westminster, Barry and Jean Joy of Emmitsburg, Lori Joy of Emmitsburg, Patrick and Tara Joy of Frederick, and Tamara Joy of Bel Air; grandchildren, David Manning and wife Karen, Christopher Manning and wife Jamie, and Elise Manning, Leanne Toms and husband Mark, Wesley, Hayley, Matthew, Alex, and Katie Joy, Lauryn Blair and husband Patrick, Danielle Hoff, and Alexandra Joy Shenning; great-grandchildren, Jared, Braden, Rylan, Emily, and Carson Manning, and Colin Toms; sister, Gloria Bauerline of Emmitsburg; brothers, Michael Joy of Emmitsburg, Donald Joy of Westminster, and Joseph Joy of Baltimore; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by siblings, John, Robert, Kenneth, Patrick, and Rosemary Joy, and Delores Henke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 44 DePaul St., Emmitsburg with Rev. Charles F. Kreig, C.M. as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the New St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 West Main St, Emmitsburg, MD, where prayers will begin at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Ave., PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, PO Box 376, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
