Francis V. Hobbs, Sr., age 88, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at St. Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.
Born July 17, 1926 in Pikesville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Charles and Ruth E. (Wivell) Hobbs, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth E. (Smith) Hobbs.
Francis was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. He owned and operated East End Garage in Emmitsburg for many years and was a school bus driver and contractor. He enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Mary E. Hess of Ortanna, PA; son, Francis “Frank” V. Hobbs, Jr. of Emmitsburg; grandchildren, Michele Strickhouser and husband Kevin of Mt. Wolf, PA, Travis Hess and wife Lori of Grasonville, MD, Kimberly John of West Laurel, MD, and Kim Hobbs of Fairfield, PA; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Hobbs and Edgar Hobbs both of Fairfield, PA, Donald Hobbs of Gettysburg, PA, Patrick Hobbs of Taneytown, MD, and George Hobbs of Sykesville, MD; sister, Margaret McNair of Woodstock, MD; close friends Charles Eyler and Jeannie Hewitt; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Hobbs and sister, Helen Sanders.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg with Rev. John J. Holliday, C.M. as celebrant. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 p.m. until the time of the mass on Wednesday.
