Francis Gerard Eckenrode, Jr., age 81, of Hampstead, Maryland, died peacefully on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster.
Born March 16, 1932 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Francis G. Eckenrode, Sr., and Mary (Avery) Eckenrode. He was predeceased by his wife Doris Evelyn (Trite) Eckenrode, and by his former spouse, Arneda Eckenrode.
He was a veteran of the Maryland National Guard and the U.S. Navy. Francis worked hard all his life; beginning with the Railroad, Koontz Creamery, followed by Genstar Stone Products where he worked as a maintenance clerk for 38 years. He also was a newspaper deliveryman for the CC Times and Baltimore Sun; and just retired from Random House in January 2013 as a security guard, where he was known as “Smiley”. Following his discharge from the military, he became a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Westminster and enjoyed his ministry. He loved music especially blue grass and big band; and was an avid sports fan of the Orioles and Ravens. He was famous for his joke telling and selling eggs.
Surviving are children, Mary and Keith Blank of Cresaptown, David and Sharon Eckenrode of Hanover, PA, Charles Eckenrode of Hampstead, and Jackie and Bill Hamrick of Union Bridge; step-children, Jerry Green of New Windsor, Robert “Bobby” Green of Va.; sisters, Delores Iconi of Cockeysville, Irene McVoy of GA, and Mildred Eckenrode of Towson; brothers, Bernard Eckenrode of Finksburg and Leo Eckenrode of Nottingham.
Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a step-son, Dennis Green.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster with Elder Lou Travis officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
