Evelyn Armacost Schaeffer, 92, life-long resident of Westminster, Maryland passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020 at Brightview Assisted Living in Westminster.
Born on July 22, 1928 in Finksburg, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Leona (Kay) Armacost. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late John Calvin Schaeffer, who predeceased her in 2010.
Evelyn graduated from Westminster High School then attended and graduated from Baltimore Business College. She was the bookkeeper for W.H. Davis Buick and then worked for Babylon Tax Office in Westminster. Evelyn was a very active member of St. Mary’s United Church of Christ until her decline in health. She was on the sewing committee for years making lap blankets for many and playing piano for her Adult Sunday School class. Evelyn volunteered with Meals on Wheels, she was a member of Westminster Women’s Club, and a member of the BSBS Card Club. She loved to garden and was happiest outside with her flowers and pulling the weeds. She was very proud of her flowers beds, especially her lily bed. She also enjoyed having family and friends over to Hilltop Drive for many different occasions; as well as gathering at the family summer retreat “Spoon Hill” in Union Mills. Super Bowl parties were her favorite, hosting over 30 bowl games. In her later years, she was a resident of Brightview Assisted Living, where she enjoyed Bingo and many different activities that were offered. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Moga”.
Evelyn is survived by son, J. Craig Schaeffer and wife Margie of Blue Ridge Summit, PA; daughter, LouAnn Watson and husband John of Warner Robins, GA; daughter-in-law, Deborah Day Schaeffer of Westminster; sister, Kate A. Koontz of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Emily Kay Boyd and husband Loder of Perry, GA, Calvin L. Schaeffer and wife Niko of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, and Samuel E. Schaeffer of Westminster; great-grandsons, Nathan V. Schaeffer and Colton L. Boyd.
She was predeceased by her youngest sister, Louise Armacost; son, Monte A. Schaeffer; daughter-in-law, Denise Murdock Schaeffer; and by grandsons, Keith Andrew Schaeffer and John David Thompson.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St., Westminster with the Rev. Sam Chamelin officiating (Due to Covid restrictions, for those unable to attend, services will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/MDFHWestminster). Burial will follow next to her beloved husband John in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Silver Run.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Evelyn’s name may be given to St. Mary’s United Church of Christ, 1441 Mayberry Rd., Westminster, MD 21158 or Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
