Eugene "Gene" Sell

September 16, 1926 — April 29, 2014

Eugene “Gene” Sell, 87, of Taneytown, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.  Born September 16, 1926 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Norris Franklin and Helen Ridinger Sell.  He was the husband of the late Pearl Bollinger Sell, to whom he was married for 47 years.  She died in 2009.

Gene was a 1943 graduate of Taneytown High School.  He was a life-long member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown where he served in Social Ministry, Church Council, and Adult Sunday School class.  He was employed by Baumgardner’s Bakery in Taneytown for 44 years.  He also worked at Martin’s, Jubilee, and Kennie’s Food Markets.  He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, serving during World War II in the Marianas and the Philippines.  He loved the music of the 20s, 30s, and 40s and played trombone with the Taneytown IOOF Junior Band, the Westminster Municipal Band, and Gene Frock’s Dance Band.  Gene would often be found in the spring and summer working in his garden.  When not in his garden, he could be found in the kitchen baking delicious pies and his famous sticky buns for family and friends, or listening to his music and playing the trombone.

Surviving are sons, Timothy Curtis Sell and wife Jodi of Union Bridge, Ronald Eugene Sell and wife Sharon of Glenville, PA, and daughter, Amy Louise McCoy and husband Steve of Taneytown; grandchildren, Luke, Bereket, Benjamin, and Bassin Sell, and Danielle Renner; great-grandson, Malachi Sell; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sister, Dorothy Lowman, and brothers, William “Bill” Sell, Edward Sell, Donald Sell, and James Sell.

A memorial service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 9 with the Rev. Stacy Marsh officiating.  An ice cream and pie social will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Private interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, % World Hunger Fund, 38 W. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD, 21787.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Taneytown.
