Esther N. Speak

January 4, 1929 — July 16, 2012

Esther Nadine Speak, age 83, of Taneytown died peacefully Monday, July 16, 2012 at Cross Keys Brethren Village in New Oxford, PA. Born January 4, 1929 in Taneytown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Helen Stover Albaugh. She was the wife of the late Roy “Bud” Speak, her husband of 46 years, who died in 1997.



Esther was a homemaker and farmer’s wife. In her younger years, she worked as a telephone operator in Taneytown and Frederick. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown and the former Mt. Union Homemakers Club. She was very active in 4-H and served as a 4-H Club leader earlier in her life. She enjoyed cooking, baking, making crafts, gardening, and playing cards & Chinese marbles. Her greatest joy was entertaining and spending time with family and friends on the farm.


Surviving are son, Kevin Speak and wife, Judy, of Taneytown; daughter, Dawn Bowers and husband, Bryan, of Taneytown; brother, Clarence “Sonny” Albaugh of Taneytown; grandchildren, Melissa Stephens of Taneytown, Denise Cook and husband, Otis, of Frederick, Wendy Bowers and fiancé, Geoff Grisez, of Frederick, and Greg Bowers and fiancé, Lindsay Soban, of Kenneth Square, PA; 9 great-grandchildren, Seth, Shane & Hailey Stephens, Parker Bowers, Owen Cook, Dakota, Connor, Sierra, & Cameron Grisez; sisters-in-law, Georgia Smith of Walkersville, and Betty Perkins and Shirley Speak, both of Thurmont; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Lamar, John, Robert, and Jesse Speak, Howard Perkins, and Albert Smith; sisters-in-law, Margaret, Hazel, and Grace Speak, and Bernadine Stambaugh.


Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 20 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with the Rev. Josh Semovoski and the Rev. Ray Turnbaugh officiating. Interment will follow at Grace U.C.C. cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD.
