Ernest Howard, Jr.

February 3, 1932 — April 20, 2023

Westminster

After a long and hard-fought battle with Leukemia (CML) Ernest James Howard Jr, loving Father, Grandfather, Great grandfather and friend to many, passed away peacefully at his home on April 20, 2023, with loved ones by his side. He was 91 yrs old.  "Ernie" was born February 3, 1932. He was the son of the late Ernest and Lillie (Winquist) Howard.  He was the first of two children. He grew up with his sister Joan, first residing on Providence Pike in No. Smithfield, RI and attending a small rural, one-room school house, then moving to Park Ave in Woonsocket, RI.  While still attending High School Ernie felt compelled to leave and enlist in the army to help defend our Country and join in the fight against the atrocities during WWII. He finished his training but thankfully the war ended, so he was therefore never deployed, was honorably discharged, returned home and graduated from Woonsocket High School. Smitten with his high school sweetheart, a beautiful, little French girl named Jeannette, they Married (later divorced) right after High School and had 8 children. Ernie owned and operated, several small businesses, beginning with a small variety store in Woonsocket, a coffee and breakfast truck in Ocean City, MD, a roadside pit beef bbq in MD, as well as a bed and breakfast in the quaint town of Westminster, also in MD. He enjoyed being self-employed and working in sales including a time as a Real Estate Agent.  Ernie was a loyal member of the American Legion Post 282 in Woodsboro, MD, often popping in for a drink and a meal and to chat with other members, namely Dwight and Steve. He cherished his quiet, little brick, 200-year-old home in Uniontown, MD. Retired in 1997 at the age of 62, his most favorite things to do were, putz around his garage, meticulously maintain his yard and afterwards, sit on the carriage house porch with a beer to enjoy and admire it and of course watch it grow again. Ernie is survived by his sister Joan Brien, his 7 daughters; Kim Tines, Karen Wood (Rick), Robin Bonora, Gail Carroll (Pat), Lynn DeGrasse, Pam Moreland (Rick) and Leslie Harris (Kevin); 20 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and their families. Ernie was predeceased by his son Eric James Howard and his longtime companion and love of his life, of many years, Margaret L Hyde.  It was Ernie's wish to be cremated. He will be laid to rest with a small graveside service at a later date (TBD).

And so our dad has entered in

The realm of heavens dome

The glory of believers

Their bright eternal home

Forever with the Lord

His loved ones gone before

Because of God’s great love

Who has opened heavens door

We praise and thank our King

Jesus Christ our Lord

Forever to be praised

Exalted and adored!

But as many as received Him,

To them He gave the right to become

Children of God, even to those who

Believe in His name… John 1:12
