Elmer Jacob “Johnny” Hahn, age 94, of Upperco, Maryland, died on Sunday morning, January 18, 2009 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, MD.
Born September 5, 1914 in Taneytown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Martha (Fringer) Hahn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Eleanor (Carr) Hahn in 2000.
Johnny was a veteran of W.W.II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations, including the battle of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was part of the “Red Ball Express”, otherwise known as the 3886th Quarter Master Truck Company, and is one of the last surviving members. He worked for 36 years at the Bethlehem steel plant in Baltimore, and following his retirement farmed on the family farm until 2008. Johnny loved hunting and fishing, and was an outdoorsman. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lutherville, Maryland.
Surviving are sons, Elmer John Hahn and wife Saundra of Westminster, MD, and William Lee Hahn and wife Patricia of Westminster; grandchildren, William Lee Hahn Jr., and Lane Dalton Hahn, step-grandson, David Haines, and step-great-grandson, Keith Geigan, niece Lois Smith and husband Randy, nephew Richard “Bud” Hahn and wife Linda and families.
He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Hahn.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, with the Rev. Michael Roadcup officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
