Elizabeth "Betty" Billingslea Scott

December 8, 1924 — January 28, 2016

Elizabeth “Betty” Billingslea Scott, 91, of Westminster died January 28, 2016.
Born December 8, 1924 in Westminster, MD, she was the daughter of the late Dr. C. L. Billingslea and M. Ruth (Wickert) Billingslea, and the wife of the late David A. Scott.
She was a graduate of WHS, McDaniel College (previously Western Maryland) class of 1944, and John Hopkins School of Nursing, Feb. 1947, receiving her RN in April, 1947.
She enjoyed all of her roles:  nurse, wife to the love of her life, David, for 62 years, homemaker and mother.  Prior to marriage, Betty was a public health nurse in Frederick County for a brief time.  When Carroll Hospital opened in 1961, she volunteered as a nurse to help the fledgling hospital get established.  Later, after many years as an excellent homemaker, her love of nursing was fulfilled as a floor nurse and teacher of nursing aide classes at Carroll Hospital for twenty years.  She was a participant in Harvard Medical School’s Nurses’ Health Study for 30 years, furthering the knowledge of women’s health issues.
As a member of St. Paul’s UCC since 1947, Betty taught Sunday School, served on various committees including consistory, altar and search, and was involved in the soup kitchen ministry from the beginning.  She was a charter member of the Junior Women’s Club and active in Senior Women’s Club for many years.  Through the Jr. Women’s Club she was instrumental in establishing a letter award for scholastic achievement at Westminster High School.  Her love of reading led to volunteer service at school libraries, Carroll County Library and Carroll Lutheran Village library.  Along with her husband, Dave, family trips and reunions, elderhosteling, Tauck tours and St. Paul’s Travel Group were a large part of her life.  She also enjoyed reading, gardening, and bridge.  Betty’s greatest legacy is as a loving supporter and encourager of her family.  As her children moved across the country, she would be there to help at a moment’s notice whenever needed.  When spouses and grandchildren were added, she welcomed each with open arms.
She is survived by four children, Jeffrey Scott (Susie) of Westminster, Julia Irick (Max) of Louisville, Kentucky, Charles Scott (Patty) of Spokane, WA, and Sue Rackley (Marcus) of Overland Park, KS; ten grandchildren, Scott Irick, Matthew Scott (Julia), Lauren Scott Janssen (Ben), Nicole Rackley Newlan (Clint), Sarabeth Scott Templin (Joel), Christopher Irick (Erin), Janna Scott Cleary (Ryan), Daniel Rackley (Karen), Katherine Rackley and Anna Rackley; seven great grandchildren with more on the way, and three nieces and two nephews.  She was predeceased by sister Ruth Billingslea Weller and brother Charles L. Billingslea, Jr.
Visitation will be at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster on Friday, February 5, from 2-4 p.m.  A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s UCC on Saturday, February 6 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m. at the church.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Carroll Hospital Center, 200 Memorial Ave., Westminster, MD 21157, Carroll Lutheran Village Residents’ Assistance Fund, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD  21158, or to St. Paul’s UCC, 17 Bond St., Westminster, MD  21157.
