Elizabeth Bankert Hyle, age 95, of Westminster, Maryland, died on Saturday afternoon, January 31, 2009 at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.
She was born January 22, 1914 in Union Mills, Maryland, daughter of the late Calvin and Mary Yingling Bankert. She was predeceased by her husband H. Albert Hyle on December 12, 1989.
Known to many as “Betty” she grew up in Union Mills and graduated from Charles Carroll High School in Silver Run. During her senior year she was captain of the girl’s basketball team and participated in the Carroll County Bicentennial Pageant. She resided in Union Mills until her marriage to Albert in 1940. The couple would live at their residence on Littlestown Pike near Westminster for most of their lives. The couple had been married over 49 year prior to Albert’s passing. Eventually Elizabeth would reside at Carroll Lutheran Village from 2004 until her death.
She had been employed at C.O. Fishpaws, was briefly a beautician and eventually retired in 1981 from the Carroll County Board of Education as manager of the Westminster Middle School cafeteria.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s United Church of Christ in Silver Run and member of the Gleaner’s Sunday school class. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends and relatives and watching and attending sporting events, particularly Oriole baseball.
Surviving her is her son Jack Hyle of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey; and the many nieces, nephews and other family members and close friends she loved so much.
She was the last surviving and second-youngest of ten children, predeceasing her were her sisters Mary Schaeffer, Louise Bankert, Helen Bowman, Cora Lawyer and Miriam Smelser; and her brothers Martin, John, Ralph and Paul Bankert.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at St. Mary’s United Church of Christ in Silver Run, Maryland, with the Rev. Jimmie L. Schwartz, Chaplain of Carroll Lutheran Village officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, and on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
