Edward John Smith, Jr., 94, of Emmitsburg, MD died peacefully Thursday, November 26, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Ministries in Emmitsburg. Born July 22, 1921 in Frederick County, MD, he was the son of the late Edward and Ruth (Riffle) Smith, Sr. He was the husband of the late Loretta Anna (Adams) Smith.
Edward was a carpenter and independent builder. He was a member of Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, woodworking, good food, and spending time with his family.
Surviving are daughters, Betty Stambaugh and husband Albert “Larry” of Waynesboro, PA, Linda Clingan and husband Paul of Taneytown, and Karon Shorb and husband Dave of Fairfield, PA; sisters, Ruth Hobbs and Margaret Richardson, both of Emmitsburg; brother, Lewis Smith and wife Dorothy of Rocky Ridge; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Crum, Betty Hahn, and Helen Althoff, and brothers, Charles, Richard, Karl, and Jim Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 30, 2015 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD, with the Rev. Jon R. Greenstone officiating. Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
