Edward Levine Bitzel, 72, of Taneytown, passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.  Born March 16, 1949 in Hanover, PA, he was the son the late William Levine and Betty Jane Bitzel, nee Hollinger, and was the beloved husband of Debra Rebekkah Bitzel, nee Hahn, his wife of 48 years; devoted father of sons, Chad Bitzel and his wife Marie, and Tony Bitzel and his wife Shannon; daughter, Michelle Nicol and her husband Dave; loving grandfather of Breanna, Hope, Treyton, Brady, Destiny, Austin, and Abby; cherished great-grandfather of Baby Layne; nephew of Vivian Seipp and Janet Hollinger; brother-in-law of Sherry Bitzel; and is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by his brother Dennis Bitzel.

In his spare time, Mr. Bitzel was previously a member of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, where he was always involved in the Carnival and was affectionately known as “Pork Chop”.  He also enjoyed working at the Frederick County Fair each year.  His love of sports was well known by anyone who knew him from watching and cheering on his beloved Redskins, to being a Baltimore Orioles fan, but his greatest love of all was any sports teams his grandchildren were participating on.  When he was not enjoying his leisure time, he was a faithful employee of Tevis Energy for 38 years, where he worked as a dispatcher.  His greatest joy and most favorite hobby in life was making his wife happy.

The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 29, 2021 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 East Baltimore Street, Taneytown, MD, and from 10-11 a.m., Friday, April 30, 2021 until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 1125 Frederick Pike, Littlestown, PA 17340.  Pastor Rick Ritenour will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Keysville Union Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered in Ed's name to the Bethel Assembly of God Church at the above address, for use with the Homeless Christian Outreach.  Online condolences may be offered at www.myersdurborawfh.com.
