Earl “Gus” August Rice, III, 72, of Chambersburg, PA, died on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born January 6, 1948 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of Earl August Rice, Jr. of Emmitsburg and the late Mary Eugenia (Matthews) Rice.
Gus worked for over 30 years for the family business, Mt. Parnell Fish Hatchery in Mercersburg, PA. He loved serving his community fire departments as a firefighter and was a volunteer member of New Franklin VFD, St. Thomas Fire Rescue, MMPW Fire Department, Guardian Hose Co. (Thurmont), and Vigilant Hose Co. (Emmitsburg). Gus was also an active member of the Marine Corps League and the Ruritan Club. He enjoyed watching sports on T.V., and was an avid Pittsburgh fan. Gus never met a person he didn’t like, and will be missed dearly by his many family and friends.
Surviving in addition to his father Earl, are close companion and fiancée, Lois J. Seilhamer of Chambersburg; sons, Ben Rice and wife Jaime of Longs, S.C., Chip Rice of Chambersburg, and Eric Rice of Chambersburg; grandchildren, Nathanial, Blake, and Bailey Rice; brother, Scott Rice and wife Maggi of Plano, TX; sister, Mary Ann Clever and husband Steve of Gainesville, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private visitation for family will be held with the hope of a public gathering and celebration of Gus’s life to be held at a later date. Private graveside services and burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Franklin VFD, 3444 Wayne Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202 (www.newfranklinfire.com). Arrangements have been entrusted to the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg, MD.
