Born March 20, 1919 in Taneytown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Harold Seiss and Ethel (Hively) Mehring. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marell (Armacost) Mehring.
Dr. Mehring received his BS from Western Maryland College, and his DDS from the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore. His BS degree was not granted by Western Maryland College until the 1980’s because WWII necessitated that Doctors and Dentists be rushed through college in 3 years and straight to Medical school without graduating. Dr. Mehring was the first dentist to set up practice in Kensington, Maryland in 1947, and retired from a distinguished career in 1986. He was the former Mayor of the Town of Kensington, an active volunteer and long time member of the Kensington Lions Club, and a 65 year member of the American Legion. He was an avid poker player and regularly played poker with high level Roosevelt advisors during the war. He kept a regular game up to a few days before his death. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Maryland Terps, and the Washigton Redskins. He died while preparing to watch the first Redskins game of the 2010 season.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children, R. Sterling Mehring and wife Constance of Silver Spring, MD, Marion Meskill and husband Bob Fulton of Germantown, MD, and Lauren Meskill of Woodsboro, MD; sisters, Idona Teeter of S.C., formerly of Gettysburg, PA, and Wanda Mann of CO. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, and numerous loved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Philip Andrew Mehring.
