Dorothy Kathleen Herrera, age 85 of Bellport, NY died Monday, March 2, 2009 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, MD. She was born January 4, 1924 in Parris Island, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Sidney Frye and Eva Owens Williams. She was the wife of John Herrera. She attended Columbia College for Women in South Carolina and Columbia Teachers College in New York where she received a M.Ed. in music Education. She was an elementary school teacher in Parris Island until 1951 when she married John Chardon Herrera of New York City. In 1966 they settled with their young family in Bellport, NY where John worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Dorothy was known for her vibrant personality and unfailing dedication. She was involved in many church activities including Sunday School music, Bellport Methodist Women’s Society of Christian Service, choir, Mother-Daughter dinner and School of Missions. She began a second career at sixty years old as a piano teacher and continued for more than twenty years. She was also active in many community service organizations such as FISH, food pantry, Peace Group and she presented nursing home music programs for which she received a citation from the Salvation Army.
In addition to her husband she is survived by four daughters, Kathleen Herrera of New York City, Nina Herrera of Cambridge, MA, Ann Herrera of Decatur, GA and Louise Scalzi of Westminster, MD; sister, Evelyn Decker of Pennsylvania; brother, Sidney Frye Williams of Virginia; also survived by four grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of her life is planned for this spring at the Bellport United Methodist Church.
