Doris Madonna (Fisher) Vanbrakle

November 4, 1913 — October 22, 2013

Doris Madonna VanBrakle, 99, of Emmitsburg died peacefully Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at St. Catherine Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, just thirteen days shy of her 100th birthday.  Born November 4, 1913 in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Brown and Nettie Fisher Stanton.  She was the wife of the late Clarence A. VanBrakle who died in 1973.

Doris worked for many years in the dietary department of the former St. Joseph College.  She was a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg.  She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, and spending time with her family.  She loved Emmitsburg and St. Joseph Church.  She was always ready to feed any visitors to her home and always told her children to “be honest and clean.”  She leaves a legacy of love for all who knew her.

Surviving are children, Joseph VanBrakle and wife Sue of Stanford, CT, William VanBrakle of Fayetteville, PA, John VanBrakle and wife Tina of Steelton, PA, Patricia Penn Montouth and cousin Edward Smith of Gettysburg, PA, Ronald VanBrakle of Gettysburg, PA, and Richard VanBrakle and wife Joyce of Gettysburg, PA; grandchildren that she raised, Scott “Buffy” Penn of Colorado, and Jody VanBrakle Saunders and husband Ronald of Martinsburg, WV; cousins, Anna Fisher Harper and Shirley Jackson of Owings Mills; and numerous grandchildren.  Doris was an only child, but her survivors include four generations of children and grandchildren.  She was predeceased by sons, Kenneth and Thomas VanBrakle; grandson, Joseph “Stuff” VanBrakle; and daughters-in-law, Elizabeth and Ava VanBrakle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St, Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. Charles F. Krieg, C.M. as celebrant.  Interment will be private.  The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD with the rosary shared at 7:30.
