Donald Lee Stenley, 85, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, Sunday, September 5, 2021, at his home in Keysville, of Lewy Body Dementia. Born October 5, 1935 in Baltimore City, he was the son of the late Andrew Joseph Stenley and Gladys Price Stenley, nee Hampshire; loving husband of Virginia Ann Stenley, nee Dreyer, his wife of 62 years; devoted father of Tom Stenley and his wife Kim of Taneytown, Darcy Winer and her husband Rick of Westminster, and Amy Murphey and her husband Darren of Keysville; most loving “Pops” to his adored grandchildren, Jessica Badiang, Megan McDonald, Justin Cahill, Lauren Haines, Sarah Murphey, and Ethan Stenley and his nine great-grandchildren, Lavender, Marley, Price, Rilee, Reis, Kirby, Roman, Cole, and Delaney, whom were the apples of his eye.
Don graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and attended Western Maryland College, where he met his wife, Virginia. He served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. After his military service, Don and Virginia settled in Carroll County where he became a history and social studies teacher at Taneytown High School and Francis Scott Key High School. He was an educator for 31 years and was beloved and respected by colleagues and students.
While deeply involved in his career and family, Don always found time to pursue his personal passions. He enjoyed dealing antiques, restoring old homes, gardening and landscaping, spoiling his dogs, decorating for the holidays, and was extremely proud of his early Lionel train collection. He was a charter member and former president of the Taneytown Heritage Committee, now Taneytown Heritage and Museum Association, Inc. Don enjoyed the camaraderie of his many acquaintances and lifelong friends.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, P.A., 136 East Baltimore Street, Taneytown (21787). A private graveside funeral service will be held at Keysville Union Cemetery.
