Donald Elmer Hess, Sr., 86, of Taneytown, Maryland, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown.
Born on March 3, 1931 in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late David W. Hess, Sr. and Marianna (Sell) Hess. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Audrey V. (Six) Hess.
Donald worked as a brick mason for many years. He also worked for Stambaugh, Inc., Hess Excavating, Inc. and as a blue print inspector for Carroll County government. He also enjoyed farming. He was a member of the Taneytown Presbyterian Church, Harney Volunteer Fire Company, Taneytown Senior Center, and H & H racing. He enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards, BINGO, and was an avid Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan.
Surviving are daughters, Diane L. Cavanaugh and husband Kevin of Hanover, PA, Sherrie L. Sanders and husband Jeff of Fairfield, PA, and Robin S. Caples and husband Jeff of McSherrystown, PA; daughter-in-law, Lois Hess of Taneytown; sister, Elizabeth Lorah of Williamsport, PA; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son Donald E. Hess, Jr.; brother, David W. Hess, Jr.; and sister, Josephine Anderson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with Rev. Lloyd Fuss officiating. Interment will be private.
