Donald Elmer “Donnie” Hess, Jr., 63, of Taneytown died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster. Born July 10, 1950 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of Donald and Audrey Six Hess, Sr. of Taneytown. He was the husband of Lois Pentz Hess, to whom he was married for 30 years.
Donnie was a welder for Schindler Elevator Corporation in Gettysburg, PA for 37 years. He enjoyed playing softball during his younger years. He was an avid drag racer who built and raced his own race cars, and enjoyed spending time in his garage tinkering with various projects.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are children, Lisa Dettinger and husband Daniel of Littlestown, PA, Corey Hess and wife Shelly of Taneytown, Jennifer Keeton and husband Daymon of Stedman, NC, and Karen Dettinger of Taneytown; sisters, Diane Cavanaugh and husband Kevin of Hanover, PA, Sherrie Sanders and husband Jeff of Fairfield, PA, and Robin Caples and husband Jeff of McSherrystown, PA; grandchildren, Kayla, Kelly, Cody, Ryan, Nathan, Tyler, Nicholas, and Elijah; and also numerous nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
