Dennis Nusbaum Yingling, age 95, of Westminster died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Carroll Lutheran Village. He was born February 17, 1914 in Pleasant Valley, MD on the family farm, the son of the late C. Tobias and Ruth Nusbaum Yingling. He was the husband of the late Louise Cunningham Yingling and the late Betty Smith Yingling. He graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1931 and from Western Maryland College in 1935 with a B.A. While at Western Maryland College he served in the ROTC and upon graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served active duty in May 1941 during World War II with the 751st Tank Battalion in the Sixth Campaign in North Africa & Italy including 2 amphibious landings in Italy receiving the Bronze Star. Following his discharge from the Army he served for 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserves as rank of Lieutenant Col. He worked at Commercial Credit from 1936 until 1955 and then Carroll County Bank & Trust, retiring as President in 1982. He was member and past president of the Westminster Lions Club, member of the Westminster American Legion Post #31, Westminster V.F.W. Post #467, the Historical Society of Carroll County and the Retired Officers Association. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Bonita Yingling of Frederick, Suzan Geppi of Columbia, Patricia Shipley and husband Sterling “Buzz” of Frederick, Karen Shultz of Orlando, Fla, Harriet Zurl and husband John of Silver Run and Sidney Guy and husband Tom of Denver, Col; brother, Alfred Yingling of Westminster; also survived by 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Hosfeld and brothers, David and Loring Yingling.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in Krug Chapel Auditorium at Carroll Lutheran Village with Rev. Jimmie L. Schwartz, chaplain officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends Monday 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster and Tuesday 10:00 AM until time of service at the Krug Chapel.
