David Arthur Scott, 85, of Westminster, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Dove House. Born May 23, 1923 in Natick, MA, he was the son of the late Arthur P. and Myrtle Annis Scott. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Billingslea Scott, his wife of 61 years. His family moved to Westminster, MD in 1932. While attending Westminster High School (class of 1939) he was a member of the first four man golf team there and continued to enjoy the game for many years. He attended Johns Hopkins University. Enlisting in the Army Air Corps in the summer of 1942, he was Cadet Leader of the First Army Air Corps college training detachment at Clemson College, SC. Upon receiving his 2nd Lieutenant commission and Pilot Wings in February, 1944, and further training as pilot of B24 Liberator bombers, he was transferred overseas to the 392nd Bomb Group, Wendling, England. Subsequently, he completed 35 missions over Germany, during which time he received the Air Medal and five Oak Leaf Clusters. After a period as Squadron Training Officer, he was assigned to pilot a crew returning to the United States via Iceland and Greenland after VE Day.
Soon after returning home, he joined Beacon Steel Products Company, Inc., a poultry equipment manufacturing company started by his father in 1932. He enjoyed various aspects of marketing, as well as developing products needed by the growing industry. He served as president for many years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Westminster Forest and Stream Club and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster. He was also a member of the original Carroll County General Hospital Executive Board, organized in 1957 to fund and build a hospital in Carroll County. His particular task was to serve as Equipment Chairman, and in that capacity he was responsible for purchasing the equipment for the new hospital. He served as President of the hospital board 1970-71. A member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ since 1932, he served on many church committees including Consistory and Finance.
Elderhosteling, Tauck Tours, St. Paul’s Travel Group, and many memorable, wonderful family trips and reunions were a large part of his life, along with playing bridge and golf.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: son Jeffrey Scott and wife Susie of Westminster; daughter Julia Irick and husband Max of Louisville, KY; son Charles Scott and wife Patty of Spokane, WA; daughter Sue Rackley and husband Marcus of Overland Park, KS; and ten grandchildren: Scott Irick, Matthew Scott and wife Julia, Lauren Scott, Nicole Rackley Newlan and husband Clint, Sarabeth Scott Templin and husband Joel, Christopher Irick, Janna Scott, Daniel Rackley, Katie Rackley, and Anna Rackley. Also surviving are: a sister, Lalia S. Riley of Fairhaven; a brother-in-law, Norman Weller of Westminster; and five nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert A. Scott.
The funeral service will be held in Krug Chapel at Carroll Lutheran Village, 11 am on Wednesday, March 25. Friends may call on Tuesday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD from 3-8pm, and beginning at 10am on Wednesday at the chapel prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Westminster Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Carroll Hospital Foundation, 200 Memorial Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157, and designated for the benefit of either Carroll Hospital Center or Carroll Hospice.
