Chester Leroy Springer, 85, of Taneytown, Maryland died peacefully Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster. Born September 29, 1929 in Thurmont, he was the son of the late William and Minerva Willhide Springer. He was the husband of the late Evelyn Staub Springer, to whom he was married for 40 years. She died in 2009.
Chester was a woodworker at M.R. Pfoutz & Sons in Union Bridge for many years. He also worked at Taney Supply in Taneytown. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He attended Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown. Chester enjoyed growing tomatoes and squash, tinkering with cars, dancing, listening to country music at local carnivals, and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are daughter, Tammy Vetter and husband Kevan of Freeland; son, Glen Springer of Taneytown; sister, Sylvia Bushman and husband Bo of Emmitsburg; grandson, Ryan Vetter; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Louise, Ethel Viola, Eva May, Lillian Grace, Agnes Catherine, and Hilda Romaine, and brothers, Alvin Lester, Edwin Ellsworth, Raymond George, and Carroll Ernest.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 10 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with the Rev. Ann Schlossnagle officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Monday.
